Richmond, Virginia – Much of the Mid-Atlantic is enjoying a warm and sunny Thursday, but residents should prepare for a soggy turnaround starting Friday as a round of rain and thunderstorms pushes into the region.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, scattered showers will move in by Friday morning, intensifying into locally heavy thunderstorms by Friday night and continuing through Saturday. Areas from central Virginia to southern Pennsylvania could receive up to 0.5 inches of rain, with isolated totals exceeding 1 inch possible during stronger downpours.

Cities like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Harrisburg may see periods of reduced visibility and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along creeks. Commuters should expect slick roads, especially during the Friday evening and Saturday morning hours. Emergency management officials are urging drivers to avoid water-covered roads and monitor alerts.

While today’s weather is ideal for outdoor activities, residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture, clear gutters, and charge devices ahead of potential power disruptions tied to the storms. This system is expected to exit the region late Saturday, with drier weather returning by Sunday afternoon.

Additional watches or advisories may be issued if rainfall rates intensify.
