Baltimore, Maryland – Temperatures are soaring across the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday, with highs climbing into the upper 80s ahead of a potentially dangerous round of evening storms targeting areas west of I-81.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a warm front is pushing through the region, fueling well-above-average temperatures. By Tuesday evening, a line of severe thunderstorms may develop, primarily impacting western Maryland, the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. Damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning are the main threats.

Cumberland, Maryland and Romney, West Virginia could reach 87°F this afternoon, while Winchester and Harrisonburg, Virginia may top out near 86°F. The Storm Prediction Center places these regions under a Slight Risk for severe storms, while locations east of the Blue Ridge, including Frederick, Leesburg, and Gaithersburg, are under a Marginal Risk.

Residents in the affected areas should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and ensure mobile devices are charged in case of power outages. The evening commute west of Washington, D.C. may be impacted by sudden downpours or wind-blown debris.

Storms are expected to taper off overnight, but additional updates may follow if conditions intensify.
