Harrisburg, PA – A significant and potentially dangerous heat wave is expected to impact the Mid-Atlantic beginning Monday, with Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina forecast to see heat index values soar above 100°F through much of next week.
According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, a High Risk (greater than 60%) of extreme heat has been issued for much of the Mid-Atlantic starting June 24. Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 90s, with oppressive humidity levels making conditions feel even hotter—especially in urban centers like Richmond, Raleigh, and Philadelphia.
The event follows a weekend heat surge in the Midwest and will bring prolonged hot weather eastward into early next week. Overnight temperatures will offer limited relief, with lows staying in the 70s, heightening the danger for those without access to air conditioning or proper cooling.
Health officials across the region are urging residents to take precautions, particularly vulnerable populations such as seniors, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, stay well-hydrated, and use cooling centers if needed.
The extended duration of the heat wave increases the risk of heat-related illness, power strain, and impacts on public infrastructure.
