Grand Rapids, MI – Lake effect snow is expected to blanket parts of western Michigan tonight into Wednesday, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions. Counties along the Lake Michigan shoreline, including South Haven and Ludington, could see up to 6 inches of snow by Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids, cold northerly winds will drive this weather pattern, with snowfall west of US-131 being the most significant. Snowfall totals are projected to range from 2 to 4 inches in most areas, with localized higher amounts in lakeshore counties. The snow is expected to develop tonight, moving from north to south, and continue through late Wednesday evening.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially near lakeshore roads and highways, including US-131 and nearby routes. Reduced visibility, icy roads, and blowing snow may affect commutes. The NWS advises motorists to allow extra travel time and ensure vehicles are winter-ready.

Looking ahead, snow showers are likely to persist into Friday, with daytime highs near 24 degrees on Wednesday and dropping to a frigid 10 degrees at night. Thursday will bring mostly sunny skies but colder conditions, with a high of 26 degrees. Snow is expected to return Friday, bringing another chance for accumulation and reinforcing winter hazards.

Residents should monitor forecasts and plan for disruptions, especially those traveling near Lake Michigan. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities for the latest weather alerts.
