Marquette, MI – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, bringing freezing rain, heavy snow, and strong winds through late Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 11 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday for several counties, including Alger, Baraga, Iron, and Marquette. Freezing rain is expected, creating hazardous travel conditions with a light glaze of ice on roads, bridges, and overpasses.
A Winter Storm Watch will then take effect Tuesday evening, lasting through late Wednesday night. Northern Marquette and Baraga counties could see between 4 and 13 inches of snow, while Keweenaw and Northern Houghton counties may receive 5 to 8 inches. Gusty winds up to 45 mph could lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Additional snowfall of 5 to 8 inches is possible in Ontonagon, Gogebic, and Southern Houghton counties, further complicating travel. The NWS warns that road conditions will deteriorate, making travel difficult or even impossible at times.
Residents are advised to use caution while traveling, prepare for possible power outages, and stay updated on weather alerts. The hazardous conditions are expected to significantly impact Tuesday and Wednesday commutes.
For the latest updates, monitor local forecasts and road conditions before heading out.
