Grand Rapids, MI – Lake-effect snow is sweeping through West Michigan, creating hazardous travel conditions along major highways and roads. Snow showers, low visibility, and icy conditions are expected to last through Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service, key areas impacted include I-94 near Paw Paw, US-131 in Kalamazoo, I-196 in Holland, and US-10 in Ludington. Drivers should prepare for snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and subzero wind chills, making travel dangerous. Accumulations of up to 3 inches are possible in localized areas by Tuesday morning.

Overnight temperatures will dip to 3°F Monday night, with wind chill values as low as -13°F. Winds of up to 20 mph may worsen visibility in open areas. Snow showers will persist into Tuesday with temperatures struggling to reach the low 20s.

By Wednesday, snow will taper off slightly, but frigid conditions will remain, with nighttime lows around 16°F. More snow showers are likely Wednesday night into Thursday, with an additional 1–2 inches of accumulation possible.

Officials urge drivers to reduce speed, allow extra travel time, and carry an emergency kit when traveling through affected areas. Stay updated by monitoring weather alerts and avoiding unnecessary trips on impacted highways.

This prolonged winter weather event highlights the challenges of arctic air crossing Lake Michigan, a frequent phenomenon for West Michigan residents. Prepare for a cold and snowy week ahead.
