Gaylord, Michigan – Air quality across northern Lower Michigan will remain a concern Friday as wildfire smoke from Canada keeps fine particulate levels in the unhealthy range for sensitive groups.

According to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, an Air Quality Advisory remains in effect for Friday, June 6, covering Otsego County and more than 25 others. Residents in Gaylord and along I-75 are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially those with asthma, heart conditions, or other respiratory issues.

Visibility may still be reduced at times, though skies will turn mostly cloudy Friday with a high near 74°F. The calm wind pattern and lingering haze are keeping smoke trapped near the surface. Windows should remain closed overnight, and indoor air filters (MERV-13 or higher) are recommended.

Saturday will offer a break with clear skies and a high around 72°F before conditions turn unsettled again. Showers and a possible thunderstorm are likely Sunday, especially after 2 p.m. Another round of rain is expected into Monday morning, with cooler temps and highs in the mid-60s.

Health officials encourage monitoring symptoms like coughing, wheezing, or burning eyes and using indoor air purifiers if possible.

The air quality alert may be extended if smoke persists. Check airnow.gov for current readings and michigan.gov/mdhhs for health tips.
