Gaylord, Mich. – Thunderstorms are expected across northern Michigan tonight as a slow-moving cold front brings heavy rain, frequent lightning, and the chance for small hail from Cadillac to Alpena.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the most intense storms will move through the region between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., with rainfall totals reaching up to 1.25 inches in areas like Grayling, West Branch, and Gaylord. Gusty outflow winds and brief downpours may make for dangerous driving conditions, especially on US-131 and M-32.

Rainfall projections show West Branch and Houghton Lake could see the highest totals overnight, while Boyne City, Petoskey, and Traverse City are expected to pick up between a quarter- and half-inch of rain by Wednesday morning. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated strong storms could produce damaging wind gusts or large hail.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities during storms and secure loose items. Charge devices in case of outages, and stay updated via NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts.

Storm activity is expected to taper off by midday Wednesday, but additional advisories may be issued overnight.
