Gaylord, MI – Another round of lake effect snow is forecast for Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula this Saturday, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions. Whitefish Point, Sault Ste. Marie, and Sugar Island are expected to receive an additional 3–5 inches of snow by Saturday evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the snow will combine with wind chills that dip below zero, creating dangerous travel conditions. Roads, including portions of M-123 near Whitefish Point, are expected to become slick with reduced visibility. Drivers should exercise extreme caution, particularly during the heaviest snowfall periods, which are expected in the morning and early afternoon.
Temperatures on Saturday are forecast to peak at a frigid 19°F, with wind chills making it feel as cold as -5°F. Snowfall intensity is expected to diminish late Saturday evening, but untreated roads may remain icy as freezing conditions persist overnight.
Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny skies and calmer conditions will provide brief relief, with highs near 30°F. However, freezing rain is possible late Sunday night into Monday, creating new hazards across northern Michigan roadways. Early next week, a mix of rain and snow showers is likely to impact Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures hovering in the mid-30s.
Residents and travelers are urged to monitor weather updates and prepare for slow travel. Those driving should keep emergency kits in their vehicles and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall.
