Gaylord, Michigan – Strong winds and bone-dry air are setting the stage for elevated fire danger across northern Lower Michigan today, prompting officials to urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, northwest winds of 8 to 15 mph—gusting as high as 25 mph—combined with humidity levels dropping to 20–30% this afternoon, have significantly increased wildfire risk in forested and grassy areas across the region.

Counties including Otsego, Cheboygan, Crawford, and Presque Isle are at heightened risk. Fires could ignite easily and spread rapidly under current conditions. Local fire departments remain on alert, and residents are asked to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is also advising against any open burning. Residents should double-check burn permits and secure outdoor equipment that could spark.

Conditions may ease after sunset, but fire crews caution that dry fuels remain a concern. Elevated fire danger could return later this week if dry weather persists.
