Marquette, Michigan – Waves crashing across Lake Superior Monday are more than just dramatic—they’re dangerous. Beachgoers in Marquette, Alger, and Luce counties are being urged to stay out of the water as rip currents and high surf persist into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, July 7. Swimmers and paddlers are warned to avoid popular areas including Middle Bay and Little Presque Isle, where previous rescues and fatalities have occurred during similar wave conditions. Au Train River mouth, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Grand Marais Harbor are also listed as high-risk zones.

Waves are hitting in rapid succession, creating fatigue-inducing conditions that can trap even experienced swimmers. Lifeguards may not be present in many of the affected locations, and rescue efforts can be delayed by rough surf. U.S. Highway 41, which runs near several of the impacted beaches, could also see increased traffic or parking issues as people seek alternate recreation spots.

Safety Tip: Stay off breakwalls and jetties, and avoid swimming or wading today. Dangerous currents are difficult to detect from shore.
