Kalkaska, MI – A winter storm is bringing heavy snow and hazardous travel conditions to Kalkaska and Antrim counties, with a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 AM Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, areas north of M-72 in Kalkaska County could see 3 to 6 inches of additional snowfall, while southern portions may receive 1 to 3 inches. In Antrim County, snow totals are expected to reach 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Wind gusts up to 30 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile at times.
Travel will be dangerous, particularly on bridges and overpasses, where roads may become slick. Whiteout conditions are likely, making travel potentially life-threatening, especially in open areas. The storm is expected to impact both the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes.
Safety Precautions:
• Avoid travel if possible.
• If driving is necessary, carry an emergency kit with food, water, blankets, and a flashlight.
• Expect rapid changes in visibility and road conditions due to lake-effect snow.
Conditions are expected to improve after 7 AM Tuesday, but residents should monitor updates and use extreme caution if traveling.
