Detroit, MI – Light snow and rain are expected to move through Southeast Michigan today, with a stronger snow system targeting areas north of I-69 late Thursday. Motorists and residents should prepare for slick roads and possible minor accumulations impacting Thursday night and Friday morning commutes.
According to the National Weather Service, today’s system will bring a brief period of snow mixing with rain, primarily affecting southern areas like Detroit. Accumulation will remain light, primarily on grassy and unpaved surfaces, as temperatures stay near 38 degrees. By afternoon, precipitation will shift to rain before clearing tonight with lows dropping to 27 degrees.
Looking ahead, a more widespread snow system is likely late Thursday into Friday. Snowfall is forecasted to begin Thursday evening and continue overnight, particularly affecting areas north of I-69 and the Thumb region. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible by early Friday, with locally higher amounts in isolated areas. Temperatures Thursday will hover near 33 degrees, with winds shifting to the southeast in the afternoon.
Friday’s forecast calls for snow tapering off by early afternoon, followed by calmer conditions and highs near 34 degrees. Motorists traveling Friday morning are advised to allow extra time for slick road conditions, particularly in areas north of Detroit.
The weekend will bring colder air, with highs reaching only the mid-20s by Saturday. Partly cloudy skies are expected to dominate through Sunday, offering a brief reprieve from active weather.
