Marquette, MI — A winter storm is set to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with Marquette expecting snowfall accumulations of 1 to 4 inches beginning Sunday night. Travel could become hazardous as snow continues through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, widespread snow will begin late Sunday evening, with localized areas near Lake Michigan possibly seeing higher totals. The heaviest snow is forecast during overnight hours, creating slick conditions on local roads, including US-41 and M-28. Wind gusts up to 20 mph may lead to drifting snow, further reducing visibility.
The storm will be followed by lake effect snow Monday, bringing an additional 1 to 2 inches in some areas. Daytime temperatures will range from 25°F to 30°F on Sunday before plunging into the teens Monday afternoon. Wind chills could dip to single digits, making outdoor activity potentially dangerous.
Residents are advised to exercise caution when traveling, particularly during early Monday morning commutes. Check road conditions frequently, as icy patches may develop in areas exposed to strong winds. Use winter gear when heading outdoors to avoid frostbite risks.
The extended forecast suggests cold and snowy conditions will persist through Tuesday, with highs around 18°F and lows near 10°F. A slight reprieve is expected Wednesday, when partly sunny skies and a high of 24°F are forecast.
