Marquette, MI — Residents in Upper Michigan should prepare for snowy conditions as lake effect snow combines with a clipper system starting today. Snowfall is expected to impact key areas, including major roads such as U.S. Route 41 and M-28, through Monday, making travel potentially hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette, light snow showers will persist today, with localized accumulations of 2 to 4 inches in areas like Manistique. Tonight, southerly winds could intensify lake effect snow, impacting southeastern portions of the Upper Peninsula. By Monday, the approaching clipper system will add widespread light-to-moderate snowfall across the region.
Monday’s high will reach near 32°F, with gusty winds making for challenging conditions. Snow showers are likely before 10 a.m., gradually becoming lighter in the afternoon. Total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches are expected in most areas, though localized heavier amounts may occur.
The extended forecast offers some relief starting Tuesday, with partly sunny skies and highs near 33°F. Christmas Day will remain cold but mostly clear, with a high near 35°F. However, another system may bring rain and snow by Thursday into Friday, with highs climbing to the upper 30s.
Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly on frequently traveled routes where blowing snow could reduce visibility. NWS recommends checking updated forecasts before heading out and keeping emergency kits in vehicles.
Be sure to prepare for changing weather conditions, especially with holiday travel on the horizon.
