Gaylord, MI – Snow and sharply colder temperatures are on the horizon for Michigan, with impacts beginning late Tuesday. Residents should prepare for lake effect snow, freezing conditions, and hazardous driving on major routes, including I-75.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, snow showers are forecast to intensify Tuesday night, with accumulations likely across northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Overnight lows are expected to dip to the low 20s on Tuesday before plummeting into the teens by Thursday. The eastern U.P. could see a wintry mix of freezing drizzle and light snow as early as today, creating slippery conditions for the morning and afternoon commutes.
By Wednesday, widespread snow showers are expected to blanket the region, with temperatures falling further to around 12°F overnight. Lake effect snow bands may bring localized higher accumulations, particularly along the lakeshores and higher elevations. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously and allow extra travel time, as visibility may be reduced, and untreated roads could become icy.
The colder trend continues into Thursday, with highs only reaching the upper teens and lows nearing single digits. The National Weather Service warns of a bitter wind chill across much of the region. Residents should dress in layers and limit outdoor exposure during early morning and evening hours.
Looking ahead, milder air is unlikely to return before the weekend. Forecasters anticipate an extended period of below-average temperatures through mid-December, paired with intermittent snow showers.
