Gaylord, Michigan – Skies across northern Michigan will be hazy tonight, but many areas are in for a better view of the northern lights compared to Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the least amount of lingering wildfire smoke is expected over the northeast lower peninsula, giving residents there the clearest shot at catching the aurora. Overnight lows will range from 35 to 41 degrees, bringing the potential for patchy frost in colder interior valleys.

With skies remaining mostly dry and calm, conditions will be stable overnight, ideal for stargazing—if visibility permits. Residents in areas like Alpena, Petoskey, and Grayling are encouraged to dress warm and look north after dark. Early risers may also catch a glimpse just before dawn.

Looking ahead, Monday will bring more haze across the region, but warmer afternoon temperatures are expected, with highs climbing to between 71 and 82 degrees. The air will stay dry, keeping the fire risk in check despite the smoke.

Stay tuned to local forecasts for visibility updates. Conditions for aurora viewing may vary quickly with wind shifts and haze density.
