Detroit, Michigan – Large hail and damaging winds could sweep across Southeast Michigan Tuesday afternoon as a cold front triggers strong thunderstorms from 1 p.m. through 7 p.m., putting millions at risk for hazardous travel and possible power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit, a “Slight Risk” (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms covers Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Flint. The main threats include hail up to one inch in diameter and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. There is still uncertainty whether the most intense storms will strike Lower Michigan directly or pass just to the east.

Cities like Grand Rapids and Saginaw could see rapid storm development along key highways including I-94 and US-23, raising the risk for slick roads and downed branches. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and have multiple ways to receive warnings in case of severe weather. Commuters are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm and watch for quick changes in conditions.

Storm chances fade by late evening, but more advisories may be issued if conditions shift. Stay tuned for updates as warnings remain possible into Tuesday night.
