Gaylord, Mich. – Large hail and damaging wind gusts could impact northern Michigan communities Friday afternoon as isolated severe storms move through the region, with the highest risk areas south of the Mackinac Bridge.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, thunderstorms capable of producing quarter-size hail and locally heavy rainfall are expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday. Damaging wind gusts are also possible, though the storm threat is expected to remain scattered in nature.
Cities including Gaylord, Cadillac, and Alpena fall within the area of concern, along with key routes like US-131 and M-32. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, stay weather-aware, and avoid travel during storm activity. Flash flooding in low-lying areas could occur with heavier downpours.
The strongest storms are most likely to develop during the late afternoon and early evening hours. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, isolated cells could intensify quickly.
