Marquette, Mich. – A dangerous combination of hot temperatures, dry air, and gusty winds will bring critical fire weather conditions to Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula from midday Monday through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT) on Monday. Affected counties include Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee.

Southwest winds could gust up to 30 mph, with high temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and low 90s. Relative humidity may fall to as low as 28%, creating ideal conditions for rapid fire ignition and spread.

Local fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, campfires, and use of equipment that can spark. Even small flames or embers can trigger fast-moving wildfires in such dry conditions.

This is the first Red Flag Warning of the summer season for the region and follows an abnormally dry spring. Fire weather could remain elevated into Tuesday if warm, breezy conditions persist.

Residents are advised to stay alert for updates, postpone any outdoor burning plans, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
