Grand Rapids, MI – A winter ice storm is poised to hit western and central Michigan, bringing freezing rain, hazardous travel conditions, and possible power outages beginning tonight and lasting into Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Lansing. The advisory will take effect at 8 p.m. Saturday and remain active until 4 a.m. Sunday for most of the region. Northern counties, such as Clare, Isabella, and Mecosta, will be under the advisory until 11 a.m. Sunday. Ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are expected, making roads slick and potentially dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will begin Saturday evening and intensify overnight. Drivers should anticipate icy conditions, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Travel may become treacherous, and authorities urge motorists to slow down, use caution, and delay unnecessary trips.

The storm also raises the risk of power outages as ice builds up on powerlines and tree branches. Residents are advised to prepare by charging electronic devices, gathering emergency supplies, and ensuring alternative heat sources are available. Utility companies have crews on standby to address outages, but restoration times could be delayed if conditions worsen.

Local officials recommend keeping an eye on weather updates and staying off the roads if possible. If travel is unavoidable, checking real-time road conditions through Michigan’s Department of Transportation is highly encouraged.

This ice storm marks a significant weather event for the region, and preparedness is key to staying safe.
