Lansing, Mich. – Gardeners across Michigan should take swift action tonight as a widespread frost advisory threatens sensitive vegetation from Grand Rapids to Detroit.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Detroit and Grand Rapids, temperatures are expected to plummet into the upper 20s and low 30s between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday. Areas under the advisory include Midland, Ann Arbor, Flint, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Jackson.
Cold, clear conditions will create ideal frost-forming conditions. Outdoor plants, especially new spring growth, may be damaged or killed if left unprotected. Residents are urged to cover tender vegetation or bring plants indoors where possible.
In southeast Michigan, overnight lows could touch 29°F in low-lying areas, while western and central cities such as Muskegon, Ionia, and Battle Creek are forecast to see lows near 30°F. This late-April cold snap mirrors past frost events that have impacted spring planting across the state.
The frost risk will ease after 8 a.m. Wednesday as temperatures rebound. However, additional advisories may be issued later this week if cold air lingers. Stay tuned for updates and take precautions tonight to prevent plant loss.
