Marquette, MI – A powerful ice storm is set to disrupt travel and daily life across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula starting Friday evening, with hazardous conditions expected through 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, Ice Storm Warnings have been issued for Marquette, Baraga, Alger, Delta, Luce, Schoolcraft, Mackinac, and Chippewa counties. The warnings began as early as 8 a.m. Friday in some areas and expand through the evening, bringing a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow.

Ice accumulations between one-tenth and one-half inch are expected, with localized amounts reaching a quarter inch or more by Saturday night. Wet snow totals could range from 1 to 5 inches through the weekend. The heaviest ice impacts are forecasted in Marquette, Escanaba, Manistique, and the surrounding areas.

Widespread power outages and tree damage are likely as ice builds on power lines and branches. Roads, bridges, and overpasses may become impassable. Friday’s evening commute is expected to be particularly dangerous.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for potential outages, and keep emergency supplies on hand. Conditions could shift into a broader winter storm by Saturday night, and updates from the National Weather Service are ongoing.
