Detroit, MI – A new low-pressure system is set to bring a wintry mix to Southeast Michigan on Tuesday, with rain and snow likely to disrupt travel during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The National Weather Service warns of up to 0.75 inches of snow accumulation by Wednesday morning, primarily on grassy or elevated surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service, this system will move across The Plains on Monday night before arriving in Southeast Michigan by early Tuesday. While daytime highs on Tuesday are expected to reach 37–40°F, temperatures will drop into the 30s overnight, increasing the likelihood of icy patches on roadways, including I-94 and I-75. Motorists are urged to allow extra time for travel and avoid unnecessary trips if roads become slick.

By New Year’s Day, frigid air will sweep into the region, bringing highs of just 34–36°F and overnight lows plummeting to 22–26°F. The colder pattern will persist through Thursday and Friday, with daytime highs only in the 20s and overnight lows dropping to the teens.

This week’s outlook highlights the need for Southeast Michigan residents to prepare for hazardous travel conditions, particularly Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Those planning outdoor celebrations should dress warmly and watch for freezing rain or snow during the evening hours.

Stay tuned for updated forecasts as the storm system approaches.
