Grand Rapids, MI – Freezing rain and snow are set to create hazardous travel conditions across southwest Michigan tonight into Thursday. A wintery mix will begin late Wednesday, with icy roads likely along I-96 and I-94 by the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will develop before 11 p.m., followed by freezing rain in the early morning hours. Areas north of I-96 can expect up to an inch of snow, while those south of I-96 may see sleet and ice accumulation. Winds could reach 22 mph, further reducing visibility and creating treacherous conditions for drivers.

Thursday will bring strong gusts up to 32 mph, possibly leading to scattered power outages. While temperatures will rise to the upper 30s, lingering icy patches may still impact roadways. Another round of snow is expected this weekend, with a 90% chance of accumulation Saturday night.

Drivers are urged to use caution, especially on bridges and overpasses where ice forms quickly. Road crews will be monitoring conditions, but untreated surfaces may remain slick through Thursday morning. Stay updated on weather alerts and allow extra time for travel.
