GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along the Lake Michigan shoreline Wednesday, with high waves and strong currents creating a serious risk for beachgoers from Mason County south to Allegan County.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Southwest winds are predicted to increase to 15 to 25 mph, generating waves of 3 to 5 feet. These conditions can create powerful currents capable of pulling swimmers into deeper water.

The hazardous conditions are most likely to impact the south sides of piers. Officials specifically noted increased risk at popular locations like Grand Haven State Park and Muskegon State Park, where waves could easily swamp the structures and sweep people into the water.

Residents and visitors should remain out of the water and avoid venturing onto piers until the threat has passed. The advisory remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon, and beachgoers are encouraged to check with local authorities regarding potential closures.
