Memphis, TN – A dangerous cold snap will grip the Memphis area overnight, but relief is on the way this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday, with wind chills dropping as low as -7°F. A Cold Weather Advisory will continue through Friday at noon, with temperatures struggling to rise above freezing. Residents are urged to layer up, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.

Despite the frigid conditions, temperatures will gradually warm into the 40s by Saturday and 50s on Sunday, bringing sunny skies and calmer winds. Friday will still be cold, with highs near 32°F, but the weekend will feel significantly warmer, offering a welcome break from the arctic chill.

Those near the Mississippi River should also remain alert for flood risks, as recent rainfall has elevated water levels. If traveling, use caution on roads, especially in the early mornings when black ice may form.
