Boston, MA – A volatile line of storms is moving across Massachusetts this afternoon, bringing the risk of tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail through 8 p.m. Saturday. Over seven million people across six states are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch, with conditions ripe for rapid storm development.

According to the National Weather Service, parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and Maine are at risk for wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail up to the size of ping pong balls. A couple of tornadoes are also possible, especially in central and western Massachusetts, including the Springfield and Worcester areas.

Cities like Boston, Worcester, and Lowell could see brief but intense storms that knock out power lines, down tree limbs, and disrupt travel. I-90 and I-91 travelers should prepare for sudden low visibility and ponding on roads. In Springfield, outdoor events may need to be postponed due to lightning and wind concerns.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and stay weather-aware. If warnings are issued, move to a basement or interior room away from windows.

The thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 8 p.m., but additional alerts may be issued as storms evolve. Stay tuned to local weather outlets for real-time updates.
