Boston, MA – Parts of northern Massachusetts are bracing for potentially dangerous ice accumulation through Sunday morning, with up to 0.75 inches possible in elevated areas.
According to the National Weather Service Boston/Norton office, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 a.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday. The advisory targets the highest terrain in the northern Worcester Hills and the eastern slopes of the Northern Berkshires. Icing is expected primarily above 1,000 feet in elevation.
Ice accretion totals are forecasted to range from a trace to 0.10 inches across much of the area, but localized amounts near 0.75 inches may occur in the far northern Worcester Hills. These totals can lead to slick and hazardous road conditions, especially on untreated surfaces Saturday night into early Sunday.
Residents in impacted zones—including Greenfield, Fitchburg, and high-elevation areas near Pittsfield—are urged to use caution while traveling. Road crews may struggle to keep up with freezing conditions on secondary or rural roads.
Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel if roads become slick. Power outages are not expected to be widespread, but some tree limbs may become stressed under the added weight of ice in the hardest-hit zones.
