Springfield, Massachusetts – Heavy rain sweeping across Massachusetts and northern Connecticut Monday night could trigger flooding on roads, streams, and low-lying areas through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Flood Watch is now in effect from 8 p.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday for a wide swath of western and central Massachusetts, including Springfield, Worcester, and Amherst, as well as Hartford, Tolland, and Windham counties in Connecticut. Up to 2.5 inches of rain is expected, with isolated downpours reaching 4 inches.

Cities like Greenfield, Fitchburg, and Willimantic are likely to see rapid runoff that may overwhelm storm drains and small waterways. Roads such as I-91, Route 2, and Route 9 could become hazardous overnight. Saturday’s storms already saturated the ground, leaving the region vulnerable to flash flooding.

Residents in flood-prone zones are urged to clear drains, avoid parking near streams, and prepare for potential evacuations. Travel should be limited during the heaviest rain periods.

The Flood Watch remains active through Tuesday evening, and additional alerts may follow as rainfall totals climb. Stay tuned to local advisories and check emergency resources.
