Boston, Mass. – Relentless, wet heavy snow is sweeping across Massachusetts tonight as a powerful bomb cyclone strengthens over New England, triggering blizzard warnings and urgent calls for residents to stay off the roads and protect their health. Snow will intensify overnight and peak Monday, creating whiteout conditions and widespread disruptions from the Berkshires to Cape Cod.
According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, blizzard warnings blanket much of the state, including Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Plymouth. The heaviest snow bands are expected during the day Monday as the storm pivots overhead. Some areas across the broader region could approach 30 inches of snowfall, with powerful wind gusts reducing visibility and compounding travel dangers.
The storm’s dense, moisture-packed snow poses a serious health risk. Unlike lighter powder, this snow carries significant weight, increasing strain during shoveling and raising the likelihood of heart-related emergencies. Health officials urge residents to avoid overexertion, take frequent breaks and push snow rather than lift it whenever possible. Older adults and those with heart or respiratory conditions should seek assistance instead of clearing snow alone. The heavy accumulation may also weigh down trees and power lines, leading to scattered outages across eastern and central Massachusetts.
Travel is strongly discouraged except for emergencies. Major corridors including Interstate 90 and Interstate 93 may become snow-covered and hazardous during peak snowfall Monday. If stranded, officials advise staying inside your vehicle with a winter emergency kit rather than attempting to walk in blizzard conditions.
Heavy snow and strong winds will gradually taper late Monday into Tuesday, though gusty conditions may linger. Additional advisories remain possible as the storm pulls into northern New England.
