Baltimore, MD – Residents across Maryland could see damaging wind gusts, hail, and intense lightning as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 12 a.m. Tuesday. Baltimore City and 17 counties, including Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Anne Arundel, are under the alert.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch—issued at 6 p.m. Monday—covers much of central, southern, and eastern Maryland, including the counties of Frederick, Harford, Carroll, and St. Mary’s. Storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, which may down trees and power lines, causing scattered outages. Small hail and brief heavy downpours are also possible.

Travel along I-95, I-70, and US-50 could become hazardous during peak storm activity, particularly in Baltimore, Columbia, Rockville, and surrounding suburbs. Emergency managers are urging residents to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and stay indoors as storms roll through.

This is the first widespread thunderstorm threat of May and follows a stretch of warmer-than-average temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic. Residents should charge devices, monitor local alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel through midnight.

More watches or warnings could follow as storms evolve. Updates will be issued as conditions warrant.
