Oakland, Md. – Gardeners in Western Maryland and the Allegheny Highlands should prepare for a sudden drop in temperatures early Monday, as a frost advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, low temperatures in the mid-30s are expected between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday across Western Garrett County (MD), Highland County (VA), and the western portions of Grant and Pendleton Counties (WV). Valleys in these regions are especially vulnerable to frost formation.

Sensitive outdoor vegetation could be damaged or killed if left unprotected. Residents are advised to bring potted plants indoors or cover crops and garden beds with frost cloth or blankets.

This unusual early June frost event comes just weeks after the region experienced unseasonably warm temperatures, creating a risk for recently planted gardens and early bloomers.

Cooler-than-average overnight lows are expected to continue into Tuesday, but no additional frost advisories have yet been issued. Stay tuned to local updates for any changes overnight.
