Garrett County, MD – Residents in Western Maryland and West Virginia are bracing for hazardous weather as a winter storm warning remains in effect until early Thursday.
Heavy snow of 4 to 8 inches, with isolated higher totals, is expected, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Winds gusting up to 55 mph could lead to whiteout conditions, particularly along routes like Interstate 68 and US-33. Visibility may drop below 1/4 mile in some areas. Snowfall rates could reach 1.5 inches per hour during snow squalls.
The storm began early Wednesday, with snow continuing through Wednesday evening. Freezing drizzle may complicate conditions further. Strong winds combined with snow accumulation pose risks of power outages and tree damage.
NWS advises carrying emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water, if travel is necessary. Hazardous road conditions are likely, especially west of Big Savage Mountain and Seneca Rocks.
Residents are urged to monitor local updates and delay non-essential travel. For the latest road conditions, call 511.
