Baltimore, MD – Drivers in western Maryland are bracing for hazardous conditions as a winter storm is set to bring 6 to 12 inches of snow beginning Friday morning. Higher elevations near Savage Mountain could see up to 18 inches, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, snow showers will intensify overnight and continue through midday Saturday, with the heaviest accumulation along I-68 and US-219. Brief whiteout conditions are likely, making travel dangerous, especially from the Pennsylvania border to Snowshoe, West Virginia. Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for icy roads and reduced visibility.

Friday’s Forecast

Rain will mix with snow early Friday, with accumulation starting by 10 a.m. Temperatures will hover near 42°F, dropping into the 30s by evening. Winds will be strong, with gusts reaching 30 mph. Snowfall rates may lead to rapid accumulation in mountain regions, increasing the risk of accidents on steep roadways.

Looking Ahead

Saturday will see mostly sunny skies with a high near 55°F, giving road crews a chance to clear major routes. Sunday will bring continued sunshine and milder temperatures, with highs in the mid-50s, before reaching near 60°F by Monday.

Residents should prepare vehicles with emergency kits, ensure flashlights and batteries are available, and stay updated through local weather alerts. Those traveling through mountain areas are encouraged to monitor road closures and delays.
