Michigan – Lake-effect snow continues to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this week, with conditions worsening for Thanksgiving and through the weekend. Residents and travelers should prepare for slick roads, especially on US-41 and M-28, where icy patches are likely to develop.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette, scattered snow showers will persist through Thursday, with temperatures hovering near 31°F. Wind gusts of up to 25 mph could create low visibility on roadways, especially during Thanksgiving travel hours. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and use caution when navigating snow belts and lake-effect areas.

On Friday, snow showers will intensify, with blustery winds increasing the risk of drifting snow. Temperatures will drop to a high of 30°F, while overnight lows could reach 22°F. Saturday is expected to bring calmer skies but will remain cold, with highs in the upper 20s. Snow returns late Saturday into Sunday, creating travel challenges again as temperatures dip.

Travelers heading out for holiday festivities should plan for delays and monitor local updates. Snow-clearing crews will prioritize heavily traveled routes such as US-41 and M-28, but untreated roads could still be hazardous. The NWS advises keeping emergency kits and blankets in vehicles.

As the region enters the holiday weekend, more lake-effect snow is forecast, particularly east of Marquette. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to weather updates and prepare for potential travel disruptions.
