Malibu, CA – Residents across Southern California felt a series of earthquakes Sunday, with multiple quakes striking the Malibu area, the largest measuring a magnitude of 4.1.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the strongest earthquake occurred at 12:03 p.m. PT, centered about 11 kilometers southwest of Westlake Village at a depth of 11.7 kilometers. The shaking was widely felt across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Following the 4.1 magnitude tremor, several smaller quakes were recorded northwest of Malibu, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 3.0, with depths between 9 and 12 kilometers. The largest aftershock, measuring 3.0, struck at 12:07 p.m. PT.
Reports from the USGS “Did You Feel It?” survey indicate that thousands of residents reported feeling the tremors. No significant damage or injuries were immediately reported, and the USGS classified the earthquakes as low-risk events.
While seismic activity is common in California, Sunday’s sequence of tremors serves as a reminder of the region’s earthquake potential. Experts advise residents to review earthquake preparedness plans, including securing heavy furniture and having emergency supplies readily available.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents are encouraged to stay informed through the USGS and local emergency management agencies.
