Caribou, ME – Maine residents are waking up to hazardous travel conditions as a winter weather advisory remains in effect through Tuesday morning. Freezing rain and light snow are creating slick roadways, particularly on untreated surfaces, making the morning commute perilous.
According to the National Weather Service, up to an inch of snow and one-tenth of an inch of ice are expected across central and northern New Hampshire and parts of western and central Maine. The I-95 corridor and secondary roads are especially impacted by glaze ice and reduced visibility. Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling.
Looking ahead, a significant winter storm could bring moderate snow to northern Maine and rain along Downeast areas beginning Wednesday afternoon into Thanksgiving. Current forecasts predict snowfall across interior regions, with lighter precipitation favoring coastal zones. Travel disruptions are likely on major roadways, including I-95, throughout Thanksgiving and into Thursday evening.
Temperatures will drop as Arctic air sweeps into the region later this week, signaling the start of a colder pattern heading into December. Daily snow chances persist for northern Maine, increasing potential accumulation through the weekend. Residents should prepare for icy sidewalks and challenging road conditions.
