Caribou, Maine – Dry air and gusty winds are increasing fire danger across northern and central Maine today, with rain not expected to arrive until late tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, wind gusts could reach 25 mph Monday morning, especially in higher terrain. Winds are forecast to ease through the day, but afternoon humidity will drop to between 20% and 30%, creating conditions favorable for wildfires. Residents are urged to check with the Maine Forest Service or local fire departments before doing any outdoor burning.

Daytime highs will climb into the upper 50s and low 60s from Bangor to Fort Kent. Tonight, lows will dip into the upper 30s across most of the region. Light rain is expected to develop after sunset and continue through Tuesday, bringing up to one-third of an inch of accumulation before tapering off Tuesday night.

Communities including Lincoln, Millinocket, and Houlton should remain alert for localized slick spots during early Tuesday travel. Dry weather is expected to return Wednesday and Thursday, though an isolated shower is possible north of Mount Katahdin Wednesday afternoon.

More updates may follow if conditions change.
