Portland, Maine – A late-winter arctic outbreak is forecast to bring dangerous cold and wind chills to Maine and much of the eastern U.S. from Friday through Monday, increasing the risk of frozen pipes, home heating strain, and cold-related emergencies.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a surge of arctic air will spread across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and parts of the Midwest beginning Friday, Feb. 6, with the coldest conditions expected through Sunday night into Monday. Minimum wind chills across Maine and New England are forecast to fall well below zero, with some inland and elevated areas experiencing dangerously low readings.

Much-below-normal temperatures are expected to persist into early next week, with moderate probabilities of prolonged cold across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Gusty winds will intensify the cold, increasing the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes.

The extended freeze also raises concerns for household plumbing. Officials warn that pipes located in basements, crawl spaces, exterior walls, and unheated garages are especially vulnerable during consecutive nights below freezing. In the Midwest, Lake Erie is now nearly 100% frozen, underscoring the severity and persistence of the cold air mass.

Emergency management officials urge residents to insulate exposed pipes, seal drafts, and maintain consistent indoor heat, even when away from home. Letting faucets drip slightly and opening cabinet doors can help prevent freezing. Authorities caution against using open flames or propane heaters indoors to thaw pipes due to serious fire and carbon monoxide risks.

Cold weather safety guidance also advises limiting time outdoors, covering exposed skin, and ensuring pets and livestock have adequate shelter. Commuters and outdoor workers should plan for extreme cold impacts through Monday.

Additional cold weather alerts or advisories may be issued as the weekend approaches.
