CARIBOU, Maine – Maine is waking up to its first widespread hard frost of the season as a sharp October cold snap grips Aroostook County and the northern highlands through Sunday morning. Freezing temperatures early Friday and Saturday could damage late gardens and sensitive outdoor plants.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, subfreezing lows near 28°F are expected across northern and central Maine, including communities along U.S. Route 1 and Route 11. Residents are urged to cover or bring in potted plants and disconnect outdoor hoses before dawn. Drivers along rural roads may also encounter patchy frost and slick bridges during the early morning commute.

By Sunday, a gradual rebound begins as southerly breezes return. Highs climb back into the low 60s by Columbus Day with sunshine and calmer winds. The National Weather Service notes that the extended stretch of clear skies will make for excellent leaf-peeping conditions across Baxter State Park and the Katahdin region—just in time for mid-October fall color drives.

With Halloween only three weeks away, local pumpkin patches and harvest festivals should see pleasant afternoons, though nights remain cold. Homeowners are encouraged to insulate exposed pipes, bring pets indoors, and prepare for longer cool spells ahead.
