Bangor, Maine – Memorial Day travel across much of Maine could turn slow and soggy by late Monday morning as widespread rain spreads from west to east, bringing a cool and damp holiday to communities from Bangor to Aroostook County.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rain will overspread the state by midmorning Monday with many areas seeing precipitation chances between 85% and 95% through the afternoon. Forecasters say the steadiest rainfall is expected from late morning into early afternoon before conditions gradually improve from west to east between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Communities including Bangor, Caribou, Houlton and Millinocket could see periods of light to moderate rain that may reduce visibility and create ponding on roads along Interstate 95, Route 1 and rural highways across northern Maine. Temperatures will also stay unusually cool for late May, with highs mainly in the 50s and lower 60s across northern sections of the state.

Another round of showers is expected Tuesday evening, especially across northern Maine, where isolated thunderstorms may also develop. Temperatures briefly rebound into the upper 70s and lower 80s Tuesday and Wednesday before a much cooler and unsettled pattern settles back into the region Thursday through Saturday.

Residents planning outdoor ceremonies, cookouts or travel are encouraged to keep rain gear nearby and allow extra travel time during Monday’s wettest periods. Additional advisories could be issued later this week if heavier rainfall develops during repeated rounds of showers.
