Kittery, ME – A man suffered serious injuries Friday morning after allegedly climbing onto the roof of a moving passenger bus and falling onto the shoulder of the Maine Turnpike, authorities said.
According to the Maine State Police, troopers responded at approximately 11:17 a.m. to mile marker 2 southbound after receiving reports that a man had fallen from the top of a bus. When they arrived, officers found motorists and passengers providing aid to the injured man, who police identified as 35-year-old Derrick McDuffy of New York.
Kittery Fire/EMS transported McDuffy to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening. According to witnesses, McDuffy allegedly told them he was feeling overheated and opened the bus’s emergency roof access hatch before climbing onto the roof while the vehicle was still moving.
Police said the bus driver slowed the vehicle after noticing what was happening and was attempting to pull over when McDuffy allegedly fell from the roof onto the roadway. The bus, operated by Concord Coach Lines, later received a replacement vehicle so passengers could continue their trip.
Traffic in the area briefly slowed but was not significantly impacted, according to police. Kittery Police and Kittery Fire/EMS assisted at the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
