Caribou, ME – A major storm system is set to impact northern Maine starting Thanksgiving Day, bringing snow, rain, and potentially hazardous road conditions. Residents traveling along Route 1 and surrounding areas should prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, snow is expected to begin midday Thursday, increasing in intensity throughout the evening and continuing into early Friday morning. Central parts of the region could see 2-4 inches of accumulation, while areas farther south may experience rain instead of snow.
Travelers are urged to plan ahead, especially on Thanksgiving night when snowfall is expected to peak. Winds will also increase, creating the potential for blowing snow and additional hazards. Temperatures on Thursday will reach a high near 40°F before dropping to the low 30s overnight.
Friday will remain cold, with snow tapering off by the afternoon. Highs will reach only 38°F, with gusty winds and lingering icy patches on untreated roads. The weekend will see drier conditions, but Arctic air moving in from the west will bring colder temperatures. Expect highs in the mid-30s Saturday, with overnight lows plunging into the teens by Sunday.
Residents should monitor updates and take precautions for travel, particularly during peak holiday traffic times. Make sure vehicles are equipped for winter weather and allow extra time for safe travel.
