Maine State Police Stop Alleged Drunk Wrong-Way Driver on I-295 Near Bowdoinham

Bowdoinham, ME – A 26-year-old Virginia man was arrested late Friday night after allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham, prompting a swift response from the Maine State Police.

According to a press release from state police, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on October 31 when Troop I members were dispatched to reports of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near mile marker 37. Multiple motorists reported the wrong-way driver as troopers attempted to position themselves ahead of the vehicle to intervene safely.

A responding trooper managed to enter the roadway and box in the suspect’s vehicle, successfully bringing it to a stop without collision or injury.

The driver, identified as Rashard Robinson, 26, of Chesapeake, Virginia, was taken into custody without incident. Police say Robinson was booked into the Kennebec County Jail and charged with Operating Under the Influence (OUI) and Reckless Conduct with a Dangerous Weapon.

Authorities credited alert drivers who reported the dangerous situation and thanked the Gardiner Police Department for its assistance during the response.
