Caribou, ME – A messy start to the week is expected across Maine as a new weather system threatens to bring significant snowfall Tuesday, with up to 8 inches possible in northern areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a low-pressure system will cross the region Tuesday, bringing cold air and widespread snow. Precipitation is expected to begin early Tuesday and last through the evening, impacting travel across the northern half of the state. Forecasters warn that Downeast areas may see some rain mixing in, but most of the state should prepare for all snow.

Snow, sleet, and rain that began overnight Sunday are expected to end by late morning, but roads may remain slick until drying out early in the afternoon. Highs Sunday will reach the mid to upper 40s, with temperatures falling into the 20s and low 30s overnight.

Monday will be partly to mostly cloudy with highs near 40 north and low 40s Downeast. Tuesday’s highs are forecast in the upper 30s.

Residents are urged to monitor local alerts and prepare for potentially hazardous travel conditions Tuesday. Snowfall amounts will vary, but northern zones are likely to see the highest totals.
