Caribou, ME – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for portions of eastern Maine, including Hancock County and the Penobscot Bay Coast, until 6 p.m. today, as critical fire weather conditions are expected to intensify throughout the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, strong northwest winds of 15 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph, combined with relative humidity levels as low as 25 to 30 percent, will create ideal conditions for fire starts. The combination of dry fuels and gusty winds means any fires that do ignite could spread rapidly.

Officials are urging residents to heed all outdoor burning bans today. Fire danger is high, and any open flames or heat sources should be used with extreme caution. This includes properly disposing of cigarette butts and ensuring that no embers are left to ignite the surrounding dry vegetation.

The warning is in effect for several coastal communities, including Bar Harbor and the surrounding areas, where conditions are most conducive to fire growth. If you’re in these regions, avoid outdoor burning and stay aware of conditions.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through this evening, with conditions expected to improve overnight.
