Caribou, Maine – Heavy rain is soaking much of Maine this Saturday, with the most intense downpours hitting early in the day and continuing into the afternoon, raising concerns about localized flooding in the Downeast region.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rainfall totals may reach 1.5 inches in some southern and eastern areas, with lighter amounts to the north and west. Urban and small stream flooding is possible, particularly where drainage is poor. The rain is expected to taper off gradually, ending shortly after midnight tonight.
Cities including Bangor, Ellsworth, and Machias could see travel delays due to ponding water on roads. Drivers are urged to slow down and watch for reduced visibility. In more rural communities, saturated soil may lead to minor stream overflows, especially in Washington and Hancock counties.
Residents should avoid flooded roads, secure outdoor belongings, and clear storm drains if safe to do so. With rain tapering late tonight, conditions are expected to improve rapidly.
Skies will clear Sunday, giving way to a dry, breezy, and much sunnier day across the state. No additional alerts are in place for Sunday at this time.
