Portland, Maine – Temperatures are expected to dip to near freezing early Thursday morning, triggering a frost advisory across coastal Maine and putting early spring vegetation at risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Thursday for Coastal York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo Counties. Overnight lows around 32°F could result in damaging frost, especially for newly planted or sprouting vegetation.
Communities including Portland, Rockland, Bath, Belfast, and Wiscasset are urged to cover or bring in sensitive plants tonight. The dry air mass may limit widespread frost formation, but even patchy frost can damage cold-sensitive crops and ornamentals.
This advisory comes amid an early growing season, increasing the potential impact on home gardens and local farms. Areas along the Midcoast and Southern Maine shoreline—typically insulated from inland chills—could still see pockets of frost due to clear skies and calm winds.
Conditions should improve after sunrise Thursday, but residents should remain alert for any additional cold weather advisories as spring continues to bring variable temperatures.
