Caribou, ME – A significant winter storm is expected to blanket northern and central Maine with heavy, wet snow tonight into Friday morning, threatening power outages and hazardous travel conditions. Snowfall totals between 4-8 inches are forecast, with localized areas in Aroostook County seeing even higher amounts.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will intensify this evening, especially along Route 1 and the I-95 corridor south of Presque Isle. This heavy, wet snow may down tree limbs, disrupt power lines, and make roads slick. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel after 4 p.m. and to prepare for potential outages by having flashlights, food, and emergency supplies on hand.
The storm is expected to taper off from south to north early Friday, giving way to drier but cooler conditions into the weekend. Friday’s high will reach 38°F, with lingering rain and snow showers in the early afternoon. Saturday and Sunday will bring mostly cloudy skies and isolated snow showers, with highs in the mid-30s and lows in the teens.
Those planning to shop or travel for Black Friday should exercise caution on the roads, particularly in areas prone to ice or reduced visibility. Updated road conditions can be checked via NewEngland511.org.
With additional snow expected over the weekend, drivers should remain alert and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Officials recommend delaying travel whenever possible.
